Rollover Options

We offer the ability to rollover expiring options in our trading platforms. Click the drop-down menu's below to view steps on how to rollover your expiring options depending on the trading platform you are using.

You may rollover your expiring options in Trader Workstation (TWS) using 2 different methods. These have been listed below.

Use the Mosaic Roll Builder tool to roll a multi-leg option or stock/option combination position to a new expiry. If all or part of your existing multi-leg combination position is about to expire, or if you just prefer to open the position in another expiry, you can easily roll the entire, intact strategy using the Roll Builder tool. The full combination is routed to reduce execution leg risk, and may receive price improvement versus submitting the order using individual legs. And if a leg has become worthless and you prefer to let it expire, simply leave it out of the “roll into” construction.

To roll a multi-leg combo, please take the steps outlined below.

  1. Select a complex combination position from your Portfolio.

  2. Right-click on this option and click the “Roll” button.

  3. The Roll Builder tool will populate allowing you to select a new contract to roll to.

In the Roll Builder tool, the current multi-leg position appears at the top and shows each individual leg. For each highlighted leg of the combination, select the contract you want to roll into from the option chains displayed above the Roll Builder. For convenience, current legs are also highlighted in the Option Chains, in red for sells and blue for buys, and are marked with a filled-in circle. The new legs are identified by an empty circle.

As you build the new combination, it is shown below the current combo position in the “Open” section of the Roll Builder. As you add new legs to roll into, you can modify any element (action, ratio, last trade day, strike or type) by clicking in the desired field and selecting or entering a new value. When adding new legs, we pre-select the buy/sell action to logically match your original combination. Note that the ratio is always set to 1. Additionally, the order price is updated and the Margin Impact is shown in the Order Entry line. Click Margin Impact to also view the “Estimated Combo Premium,” “Estimated Existing Combo Premium,” and “Roll to Estimated Combo Premium.”

This tool is available for futures options, options and covered stock strategies that include up to four legs.

The maximum number of legs might be lower depending on the destination.

Quickly see all of your sub-account's options that are about to expire and roll them over to the next month's contract. To do so, please take the steps outlined below.

  1. For Mosaic - Click the New Window button in the top left corner and select Advanced Option Tools > Rollover Options.

    For Classic TWS - Click the Trading Tools button across the top of the page and select Advanced Option Tools > Rollover Options.

  2. Advisors will see the Select Account dropdown that lists all of their Account Groups and individual sub-accounts.

    1. Advisors Only: Select an Account Group, an individual sub-account, or All accounts.

    2. Choose whether you want to roll calls on long stock positions, or roll puts on short stock positions.

    3. Use the default description or modify any conditions on the options, and click Refresh.

    4. Click the pencil icon next to the option to open the Option Chains and select a different option to buy or sell.

    5. Review or change the order information and click Create Orders.

    6. Orders will display in the Orders panel; click Transmit to submit (or Transmit All if you have multiple orders).

The list of Options to Roll includes any option positions for the account(s) you selected and the roll-to option that meets the criteria specified.

Mobile

Use the IBKR Mobile App via your iPhone to rollover expiring options by taking the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to the IBKR Mobile App and navigate to the Portfolio button in the bottom left corner.

  2. Select the expiring option from your Portfolio list and select the arrow icon to the right of the quote details.

  3. Select the red Roll Position button at the bottom of the screen.

  4. The option chain will populate on the screen. Select the new option leg and press Roll Option.

  5. A preview of the order will populate on the screen. Swipe the toggle to the right to submit the order.

  6. A confirmation page will appear on your screen with a summary of the order. Click Done to close out of this screen.

Use the IBKR Mobile App via your iPad to rollover expiring options by taking the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to the IBKR Mobile App and navigate to the Portfolio button in the top left corner.

  2. Select the expiring option from your Portfolio list. The quotes details page will populate on the right-hand side.

  3. Select the red Roll Position button at the bottom of the screen.

  4. The option chain will populate on the screen. Select the new option leg and press Roll Option.

  5. A preview of the order will populate on the screen. Swipe the toggle to the right to submit the order.

  6. A confirmation page will appear on your screen with a summary of the order. Click Done to close out of this screen.

Use the IBKR Mobile App via your Android to rollover expiring options by taking the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to the IBKR Mobile App and navigate to the Portfolio button in the bottom left corner.

  2. Select the expiring option from your Portfolio list and select the More button to the right of the quote details.

  3. Select the red Roll Position button at the bottom of the screen.

  4. The option chain will populate on the screen. Select the new option leg and press Roll Option.

  5. A preview of the order will populate on the screen. Swipe the toggle to the right to submit the order.

  6. A confirmation page will appear on your screen with a summary of the order. Click Done to close out of this screen.

Use the IBKR Mobile App via your Android Tablet to rollover expiring options by taking the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to the IBKR Mobile App and navigate to the Portfolio button in the bottom left corner.

  2. Select the expiring option from your Portfolio list and select the More button to the right of the quote details.

  3. Select the red Roll Position button at the bottom of the screen.

  4. The option chain will populate on the screen. Select the new option leg and press Roll Option.

  5. A preview of the order will populate on the screen. Swipe the toggle to the right to submit the order.

  6. A confirmation page will appear on your screen with a summary of the order. Click Done to close out of this screen.

Use the Trade function in Portals to sell an expiring option position and buy a new positions by taking the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to Portals and navigate to the Portfolio tab across the top of the page.

  2. Select the blue three dots icon to the right of the options position that is expiring and select Sell.

  3. Modify the order parameters and press Sell Order to place this order.

  4. A confirmation page will appear on your screen with a summary of the order. Click Done to close out of this screen.

  5. Next, navigate to the Trade tab across the top of the page and select Order Ticket.

  6. Select the Options tab and enter in the option you are looking to buy. Select the Expiration Date, Strike Price, Call/Put, and Exchange.

  7. Once you have clicked the option to buy, enter in the order parameters such as Quantity, Order Type, Limit Price, and Time-In-Force.

  8. Select Submit to place this order.

  9. You have now sold the expiring position, and bought the new position.

Desktop

Use the IBKR Desktop application to rollover expiring options by taking the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to the IBKR Desktop application and navigate to the Portfolio button in the top left corner.

  2. Click the expiring position from the Portfolio list. You will see this position populate in the quote panel on the right-hand side.

  3. Once this product is selected, select the Rollover button on the right hand side.

    Alternatively, you may right click on the position and select Rollover.

  4. The option chain will populate on the screen. Select the Bid or Ask price next to the new option leg from the list populating below.

  5. The Rollover information on the right hand side will auto-populate with the new Buy order. Select the blue Roll Contract button to place this order.

  6. The Order Ticket will populate with a summary of your buy and sell order. Click Submit Buy Order to place this trade.

  7. A confirmation page will appear on your screen with a summary of the order. Click Done to close out of this screen.

Use the IMPACT app to rollover expiring options by taking the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to the IMPACT App and navigate to the Portfolio button in the bottom left corner. Select the expiring option from your Portfolio list.

  2. Select the Roll button at the bottom of the screen.

  3. The option chain will populate on the screen. Select the new option leg.

  4. Once you have selected the new option leg, a summary screen of your buy and sell will populate. Click Create Order to place this trade.

  5. A confirmation page will appear on your screen with a summary of the order. Click Done to close out of this screen.

Use the GlobalTrader app to rollover expiring options by taking the steps outlined below.

  1. Log in to the GlobalTrader App and navigate to the Portfolio button in the bottom left corner. Select the expiring option from your Portfolio list.

  2. Select the Roll button at the bottom of the screen.

  3. The option chain will populate on the screen. Select the new option leg.

  4. Once you have selected the new option leg, a summary screen of your buy and sell will populate. Click Create Order to place this trade.

  5. A confirmation page will appear on your screen with a summary of the order. Click Done to close out of this screen.
